The First Squad reports the arrest of a Copiague man for an incident that occurred on Monday, July 11, 2022 at 10:20 pm in Freeport.
According to Detectives, Freeport Police Officers observed a 2007 Nissan proceed through a steady red light at the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and South Main Street. Officers activated their emergency lights and were able to make a Vehicle and Traffic Law stop at the intersection of Bedell Street and Atlantic Avenue where the defendant, Lloyd Berger, 60, of 107 Wartburg Avenue, had struck a fence. As officers approached the vehicle the defendant ignored their verbal commands and had to deploy their Electronic Control Device on the defendant. The defendant then placed his vehicle in reverse and drove southbound on Bedell Street and turned onto East Bedell Street where he exited his vehicle and jumped into the water. Freeport Officers with the assistance of Nassau County Police Officers on Marine Boat 6 were able to place the defendant into custody without incident after he swam to the rear of 289 Buffalo Avenue.
Defendant Berger is charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd Degree and Unauthorized use of a Vehicle 3rd Degree. He will be arraigned on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead.
Subsequent to the investigation by the First Squad it was determined that the defendant had been previously arrested on Sunday, July 10, 2022 in Freeport. Defendant Berger was charged with (5) Five counts of Criminal Possession of Stolen property 4th Degree, (2) Two counts of Unauthorized use of a Vehicle 3rd Degree and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th Degree. He was issued an Appearance Ticket returnable on Monday, July 25, 2022 at First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead.
