The Nassau County Police Department reports the arrest of a Massapequa Park woman for DWI – Leandra’s Law on Wednesday, July 13, 2022 at 3:25 pm in Wantagh.
According to police, officers responded to a 911 call for an auto accident with a disturbance on Wantagh Avenue. Valerie Decker, 46, of 82 2nd Avenue, was operating a 2017 Dodge Ram and struck a parked vehicle in front of 2166 Wantagh Avenue. Decker, while attempting to parallel park, struck a 2019 Infinity with a female occupant, 50. Officers responded to the accident.
Upon arrival, police observed Decker leaving the scene and proceed to drive southbound on Wantagh Avenue. Officers then activated their emergency lights and conducted a Vehicle and Traffic Law Stop at the intersection of Wantagh Avenue and Merrick Road.
A subsequent investigation was conducted and Decker was placed under arrest without incident. The defendant’s 8-year-old son was a passenger in the vehicle. The child was released into the custody of a family member.
No injuries were reported.
Defendant Valerie Decker is charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child Passenger Less than 16 years (Leandra’s Law), Endangering the Welfare of a Child and multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law violations. She will be arraigned on Thursday, July 14, 2022 in First District Court, Hempstead.
