
The Electronics Squad Fraud and Forgery Section reports the arrest of a Brooklyn man for a Grand Larceny that occurred on Sunday, January 19, 2025 at 3:27 p.m. in Baldwin.
According to detectives, a male victim, 46, agreed to purchase a 2024 Acura MDX from an unknown seller through Facebook Marketplace. Both parties agreed to meet in the vicinity of the victim’s residence. The victim tested out the vehicle and rendered a payment of $38,000 USC. The seller provided the purchaser with one key fob, a title and identification.
The following day, the male victim, parked his 2024 Acura MDX in the driveway at his Baldwin residence. The victim observed an unknown subject in his driveway remotely unlock and enter the victim’s vehicle and then fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle in an unknown direction. He called 911 and reported the incident.
After a thorough investigation, police determined that Edwin Ortiz, 28, of 200 Throop Avenue was responsible for the above crime. On September 30, 2025, detectives located Defendant Edwin Ortiz and placed him under arrest without incident. No injuries were reported.
Defendant Edwin Ortiz is charged with Grand Larceny 3rd Degree, Forgery 2nd Degree and Identity Theft 1st Degree. Defendant Edwin Ortiz will be arraigned on Wednesday, October 1st, 2025 at First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead.
