Homicide Squad detectives report the details of a Fatal Vehicular Accident involving a bicyclist that occurred on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at 2:40 pm in Hicksville.
According to detectives, Cari Widmyer, 43, of Hicksville was riding her bicycle and was accompanied by her 72 year old father. Both bicyclists were traveling northbound near the curb line on New South Road when a 2002 Ford Explorer, being operated by a 57 year old female and was initially traveling southbound on New South Road, crossed the road into oncoming traffic and was in collision with both bicyclists. The driver was then involved in a collision with a northbound 2009 Nissan Altima who swerved in an attempt avoid a collision. Once returning to the proper lane, the Explorer mounted the curb, left the roadway, continued on and struck a house located at 88 New South Road causing extensive damage to the home.
As a result of the collisions with the bicyclists, Cari Widmyer suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her father, who suffered a knee injury, was transported to an area hospital, was treated and released.
The driver of the Explorer, as a result of the collisions suffered cuts to her arms and contusions to her chest. Her passenger, a 65 year old male, suffered contusions to his head. Both were transported to an area hospital for treatment. The driver of the Altima was not injured.
The Explorer was impounded from the scene for brake and safety checks.
The accident, which is being deemed non-criminal in nature, is continuing to be investigated.
