The Highway Patrol Bureau reports the arrest of a New Cassel man for Driving While Intoxicated with a Minor (Leandra Law) which occurred on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at 4:10 a.m. in Hempstead.
According to police, a Highway Officer observed Jhordy Melendez, 18 of 174 Elizabeth Street driving a 2009 Nissan Rogue eastbound on Fulton Avenue while using his cellphone. The officer conducted a traffic stop in the vicinity of Fulton Avenue and Washington Street, at which time he detected a strong odor of alcohol on the defendant. During the investigation it was determined that Melendez was driving the vehicle without the permission of the owner and had a 14 year old male in the front passenger seat. Melendez was placed under arrest and the minor was released to an adult family friend.
Melendez is charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated (child under 15), Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle 3rd degree, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Driving While Intoxicated, Unlicensed Operation, and Operating Motor Vehicle while on Cell Phone. He will be arraigned on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at First District Court in Hempstead.
