The Highway Patrol Bureau reports the arrest of a Hempstead man for DWI ( Leanda’s Law ) that occurred inHempstead on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 2:35 am.
According to police, the defendant Selvin Alvarado – Rodriguez, 30, of 7 Liberty Street was traveling in a 2010 Toyota east on Hempstead Ave making a right on to Front Street at which time he struck a 2015 Toyota head on that was stopped at a red traffic signal waiting to make a left turn. The defendant and a 13 year old male passenger both fled the scene on foot. The 31 year old male driver of the 2015 Toyota on foot located the defendant and his minor passenger on Park Place in West Hempstead and was able to bring them both back to the scene after calling police.A Nassau County Highway Patrol Officer in the area responded to the scene and initiated an investigation. It was determined that the defendant was operating his vehicle while under the influence of an alcoholic beverage. Defendant Selvin Alvarado – Rodriguez was transported to a nearby hospital and is being treated for head, back and internal bleeding. The 13 year old passenger was released to his father with no injuries after being evaluated at a nearby hospital. The defendant will be arraigned when practical. The defendant’s vehicle was impounded.
