On Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at 9:00am, approximately twenty five members from the Nassau County Police Department will be joined by two Police Officers from the Metropolitan Police Service, Scotland Yard, London. One of these visiting officers will be riding in memory of the late Nassau County Police Officer Geoffrey J. Breitkopf who was killed in the line of duty on March 12, 2011. In addition, approximately two hundred officers from the Port Authority Police Department and other Police jurisdictions will ride their bicycles from the 911 Memorial in New York City to the Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C. (over 225 miles). The annual ride is made in support of the families of all the officers that have been killed in the Line of Duty. The formal ceremony will begin at 9:00am in front of the Reflecting Pools at the 911 Memorial with the reading of the names of all Law Enforcement Officers killed in the Line of Duty from New York in 2016 and the Officers killed in the 9/11 Attacks. By the time they have reached Washington D.C., The Police Unity Tour will have raised over two million dollars to support these families. After the ceremony at the 911 Memorial in New York City has concluded, all the riders will begin their grueling four day journey by bike and will arrive in Washington D.C. on Friday, May 12, 2017 at approximately 3:00pm. Upon departure from the Memorial in New York City, they will ride along the West Side Highway to the Holland Tunnel continuing south to New Jersey. Along the route they will be joined by approximately 1800 other Police Unity Tour cyclists. For the safety of the riders they will be escorted along the route by each jurisdiction’s Sheriff or Police Department. The Nassau County Police Department is proud to be a part of this Unity Tour paying tribute to our fallen heroes and their families.
