The Nassau County Police Department reports the arrest of a Brentwood man for Driving While Intoxicated – Leandra’s Law that occurred on Monday, May 29, 2017 11:13 pm in East Meadow.
According to police, a First Precinct Police Officer on routine patrol was flagged down by a witness and was told that a 2001 Honda Civic was driving erratically and swerving in the lanes. The officer saw the vehicle traveling eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike and attempted to affect a Vehicle Traffic stop. The driver of the Honda refused to stop and continued driving side swiping another automobile. The driver finally came to a stop on Hempstead Turnpike and Newbridge Road. The officer approached the vehicle and immediately detected a strong odor of alcohol from the automobile and the driver’s breathe. The officer also observed the driver to have blood shot eyes and slurred speech. Defendant Taurean James, 34, of 31 Patton Street, was placed under arrest and transported to a local hospital. Seated in the front passenger seat and the rear left passenger seat were two (2) young girls ages 6 and 3 (respectively). Both girls were released to the grandmother without injury.
The defendant is being charged with two (2) counts of Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated (Leandra’s Law), Driving While Intoxicated and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. He will be arraigned as soon as practical.
