Retirement of Mounted Unit Horse “Mike”
Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder, County Executive Laura Curran and the members of the Mounted Unit will be holding a retirement ceremony for Mounted Unit Horse “Mike” Califano at 12:30 p.m. on Monday August 13th, 2018. The ceremony will take place at the Mounted Unit Stable located in Eisenhower Park.
“Mike” was named after Police Officer Michael Califano, who was killed in the Line of Duty on February 5, 2011. “Mike” is black in color, a Percheron mix breed, in his early 20’s and wears the Shield MU4. He spent his career partnered with Police Officer Patrick Pierson and has protected the public while assigned to hundreds of details over the years. Some of which include Presidential Debates in 2012 and 2016, the Trump Rally, Oyster Fest's, Nassau Coliseum Details, School visits and funerals.
Horse “Mike” will be the first Line of Duty named horse to retire and will be adopted by a deserving family. Officer Califano’s family will be present at the ceremony and available for interviews.
