First Squad detectives report the arrest of a Manhattan man for an incident that occurred on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 3:01 pm in Bellmore.
According to detectives, while in his Bellmore home, the victim, a 72 year old male, received a phone call from a male caller who identified himself as being his grandson and advised the victim that he needed bail money as he was under arrest. The victim was then given another number to call to set up a bail amount and instructions to deliver the money.
The victim, who became suspicious and was aware of ongoing scams being perpetrated on the public, called the First Precinct and spoke to detectives about what had just transpired.

An investigating detective dressed himself as was described to the subject and with the assistance of other detectives and undercover officers, responded to Stop & Shop in Bellmore to meet him. After locating the subject’s vehicle, the detective approached the subject, confirmed the intended transaction and placed the defendant, Rafael Sanchez, 37, of 10 Fairview Avenue, Apt.2d, Manhattan, into custody.
Sanchez is charged with Attempted Grand Larceny 3rd Degree and Criminal Impersonation 2nd Degree. He will be arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on 5/2/2019.
