
The Nassau County Police Department reports the arrest of an Amityville woman for DWI – Leandra’s Law on Thursday, October 3, 2019 at 7:23 pm in Wantagh.
According to Police, officers responded to Rite Aid, 5125 Merrick Road for a complaint of a woman driving while intoxicated with a child in the vehicle. Upon police notification of the vehicle’s description, officers located the car a short distance away. The defendant, Margareth Mendoza, 36, of 98 Offaly Street was observed by responding officers operating a 2002, black Honda Accord. The vehicle was traveling westbound on Sunrise Highway when officers activated their emergency lights and conducted a Vehicle and Traffic Law Stop for failing to signal at the intersection of Beech Street. During the investigation it was discovered that the defendant had glassy bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and a strong odor of alcohol on her breath.
A subsequent investigation was conducted and it was discovered that the defendant had left the scene of a collision with a 2015, Toyota Camry. The driver, a male victim, 25, and his female passenger, 29, were not injured. Mendoza was then placed under arrest without incident. The defendant’s 4 month old child was a passenger in her vehicle. The child was left in the custody of a family member.
Defendant Mendoza is charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated (Child under 16) under the Leandra Law, Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and multiple traffic infractions. She will be arraigned on Friday, October 4, 2019 in First District Court, Hempstead.
