The Public Information Office reports the details of a Police Shooting of a Uniondale man by a Hempstead Police Officer that occurred in Valley Stream on Tuesday, October 09, 2019 at 2:20 pm.
According to police, Hempstead Police attempted to stop a white BMW for a VTL investigation which refused to stop in the vicinity of Sycamore Avenue in Hempstead. The BMW then fled onto the Southern State Parkway westbound and exited off Corona Avenue, turning east onto Blakeman Drive at which time the BMW struck multiple vehicles. The operator of the BMW placed the car into reverse in the direction of the officer at which time the Hempstead Police Officer discharged one round from his weapon striking the subject. One passenger fled the scene on foot at this point and was located a short distance away. The BMW fled the scene and crashed into a street sign on Primrose Place in Valley Stream. The driver and another occupant fled on foot and additional police units from multiple agencies responded and established a perimeter. The defendant was located in a rear yard on Evergreen Avenue in West Hempstead and placed into police custody. The other occupant was stopped a short distance away from Primrose Place.
The defendant was transported to a local hospital and treated for a gunshot wound. Recovered from the defendant was a bag containing approximately 300 pills believed to be Oxycodone. During the arrest, the defendant resisted and a Nassau County Police Officer sustained a broken hand and transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Defendant Kashawn R. Watts – Bryant, 34, of 841 Henry Street is charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd degree and Assault 2nd Degree. He will be arraigned when medically practical.
