First Squad Detectives report the arrest of a Freeport woman on Wednesday, November 20,2019 at 10:34 am for an incident involving an elderly scam that occurred in Indiana.
According to detectives, an 85 year old victim reported to detectives that she received a phone call from an individual claiming to be her grandson. The individual then instructed the victim to call an attorney as he was under arrest for DWI. The victim called a phone number that was given to her and was informed that her grandson needed $8,800 for bail. The victim stated that she could only send $2,800 which was agreed upon and the funds were sent to a Freeport address. The victim was re-contacted to send more funds and at this time she realized she was the victim of fraudulent activity. She contacted her local police department, Noblesville Police Department and Noblesville PD contacted Freeport Police.
Detectives then coordinated the delivery of the suspect package to the intended party at 129 Westend Avenue where a subsequent investigation led to the arrest of Liany Torres, 21, of the same address.
Torres is charged with Grand Larceny 4th Degree and Attempted Grand Larceny 4th Degree. She will be arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on 11/21/2019.
