Fifth Squad detectives report the arrest of a Yonkers man for an incident that occurred on Friday, November 15, 2019 at 10:00 am in Franklin Square.
According to detectives, an 87 year old male victim was contacted by telephone from a male who identified himself as his grandson stating he needed $5000.00 for bail and would be contacted by his attorney who was representing him. The “Attorney”, who then called sometime later, told the victim to put $5000.00 cash in an envelope and put it in his mailbox tomorrow, the 16th, for pickup by a bail bondsman.
The victim became suspicious, stuffed the envelope with paper and placed it in his mailbox. Upon arrival of the “Bail Bondsman”, the victim was able to observe the identity of the subject as well as the license plate number of the vehicle the subject was driving.
911 was then contacted and a subsequent investigation by detectives led to the identity of the subject, Hanlet Cabrera, 41, of 100 Herriot Street, Apt. 1D. He was located on 2/6/2020 and placed under arrest.
Cabrera is charged with Attempted Grand Larceny 3rd Degree and will be arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on 2/7/2020.
Detectives request anyone who believes that they may have also been victimized by Cabrera to call 5th Squad detectives at (516) 573-6553 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
