Major Case Bureau detectives from the Robbery Squad report the arrest of two individuals for an “Elder Scam“ incident that occurred on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at 11:00 am.
According to detectives, a 74 year old male victim, who lives out of state, was contacted via telephone on February 7, 2020 by an unknown male who stated that his son was arrested and needed bail money for his release. The victim was instructed to put $6500.00 cash into a package and have it sent to the UPS facility in Uniondale. The victim became suspicious and contacted police.
A subsequent investigation ensued and detectives, who coordinated with UPS security, set up a controlled delivery to the facility.
On Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at 11:00 am, the two defendants, Tyshawn Redford, 25, of 28 Linden Court, Roslyn Heights and Keyshawn Coveal, 23, of 118 Rhodes Avenue, Hempstead, arrived at the facility to claim the package and were placed under arrest by detectives without incident. Both defendants were in possession of forged documents in the names given to the victim at the time of the initial phone call.
Both Redford and Coveal are charged with Possession of a Forged Instrument 2nd Degree and Attempted Grand Larceny 3rd Degree. They will be arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on 2/12/2020.
