Fourth Squad detectives report the arrest of an East Rockaway man for an incident that occurred on Monday, March 30, 2020 at 11:49 am in East Rockaway.
According to detectives, Kevin Meyer, 31, of 9 Elbert Place, while alone in his home, did intentionally set fire to the residence. 911 was contacted and responding officers unsuccessfully attempted to gain access into the homes doors which were intentionally barricaded. Upon arrival of local fire departments entry was then gained into the fully engulfed home. Meyer was located and an attempt was made to remove him. Meyer resisted their efforts and actively struggled with the rescue effort kicking and punching at fire department personnel. After a continued struggle, Meyer was eventually removed from the home and was transported to an area hospital where he was admitted for smoke inhalation and evaluation for a cognitive disorder.
The fire, which was eventually extinguished by multiple local and neighboring fire departments, caused damage to an adjacent home which was occupied by a family of five, including three children. No other injuries were reported.
Meyer is charged with Arson 3rd Degree, Arson 2nd Degree, Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree, two (2) counts of Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree, two (2) counts of Obstructing Governmental Administration 2nd Degree and two (2) counts of Obstructing Firefighter Operations. He will be arraigned when medical practical.
