The Arson Bomb Squad reports the details of a building fire that occurred on Sunday, April 19, 2020 at 7:03 A.M. in Great Neck Plaza.
According to detectives, officers responded to a call for a fire at an apartment building at 50 Brompton Road. Upon arrival officers observed a heavy smoke condition coming from the third floor of the location with a female hanging out of the window. Officers entered the building in an attempt to reach the fire and at that time the female jumped out of her apartment window. An officer attempted to catch the aided and braced her fall. Several Fire Departments including, Manhasset-Lakeville, Roslyn, Plandome, Port Washington, Garden City Park, New Hyde Park, Floral Park and Vigilant Fire Department responded and were able to extinguish the fire. There were 15 trucks and approximately 85 Fire personnel fighting the fire. Three members of the Nassau County Police Department were taken to a local hospital for injuries, two for smoke inhalation and one for neck and back pain. The female who jumped out of her window was taken to a local hospital for a compound fracture of her right ankle and a partially collapsed lung. Two residents of the building and two firemen were treated for minor injuries at the scene but did not require to be transported to the hospital.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined but it appears to be non-criminal in nature at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
