County Executive Laura Curran and Police Commissioner Patrick J. Ryder would like to remind the residents of Nassau County that with the summer upon us drivers need to be aware of the increase of Motorcyclists on the road.
In 2019, there were 263 motorcycle accidents, 149 occurred between May1 and August 31st. resulting in 7 fatalities for the year.
Drivers should take extra caution while driving and keep in mind the following tips:
Motorcycles can be easily hidden in a car’s blind spot or masked by objects like, bushes, fences, bridges, etc. Take an extra moment to look for motorcycles, whether you’re changing lanes or turning at an intersection.
It is difficult to judge a motorcycle’s speed or distance. Assume a motorcycle is closer than it appears.
Often motorcyclists will down shift to slow down thus not activating brake lights, so allow for more distance, approximately two car lengths.
