Arson Bomb Squad detectives report the arrest of a homeless female for an incident that occurred on Sunday, May 31, 2020 at 1:00 am in West Hempstead.
According to detectives, Melanie Nieves, 24, homeless, was observed on video, from Sam’s Caribbean Marketplace, 225 Hempstead Turnpike, lighting a fire using available materials that she placed against the rear exterior of the store.
After reviewing the video, responding officers searched the area and located Nieves who was placed under arrest without incident.
During her arrest Nieves was found to be responsible for the following other Arsons:
3/28/20 – Sunrise Car Wash, 1820 Sunrise Hwy. Merrick
3/28/20 – Residence Garbage Fire, 92 Central Blvd. Merrick
4/14/20 – Apartment Hallway Fire, 282 Hempstead Tpke., West. Hempstead
4/30/20 – Residence Daycare Center, 175 Warner Ave. Roslyn
4/30/20 – Residence Garbage Fire, 110 Main Street, Roslyn
5/17/20 – Florist Shop, 535 Hempstead Tpke., West Hempstead
5/17/20 – Nail Salon Trash Fire, 493 Hempstead Tpke., West Hempstead
5/17/20 – Mahrose Salon Trash Fire, 507 Hempstead Tpke., West Hempstead
5/17/20 – Residence Porch Fire, 252 Parker Ave., West Hempstead
Nieves is charged with two (2) counts of Arson 2nd Degree, six (6) counts of Arson 3rd Degree and three (3) counts of Arson 5th Degree. She will be arraigned in Mineola on 6/1/2020.
