
Major Case Bureau detectives from the Robbery Squad report the arrest of a Queens man for an “Elder Scam” incident that occurred on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at 12:00 pm.
According to detectives, an 80 year old female victim, who lives out of state, was contacted via telephone on November 3, 2020 by an unknown male who stated that her grandson was arrested and needed bail money for his release. The victim was instructed to put $8000.00 cash into a package and have it sent by UPS to a Westbury address.
Detectives were contacted by UPS concerning the package and a subsequent investigation ensued. Detectives, while monitoring the delivery of the package, responded to the package destination address to await the arrival of the potential subject(s).
On Wednesday, November 4, 2020 at 9:00 am, Devon Johnson, 31, of 112-08 203rd Street, Queens, NY, was observed arriving at the location and picking up the package. Defendant Johnson was placed under arrest by detectives without incident.
Johnson is charged with Attempted Grand Larceny 3rd Degree. He will be arraigned on Thursday, November 5, 2020 in Mineola.
