The First Squad reports the arrest of a Baldwin man for Driving While Intoxicated on Sunday, December 13, 2020 at 2:24 AM in Baldwin.
According to Detectives, a Nassau County Police Department Ambulance was traveling eastbound on Sunrise Highway near the intersection of Grand Avenue while responding to an Aided call with their Emergency lights activated. The Defendant, Joaquin Cabrera, 57, of 434 Baldwin Avenue was operating a 2006 Hummer driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of Sunrise Highway and then cut across the center median and struck the front driver side of the ambulance. The defendant fled the scene in his vehicle eastbound on Sunrise Highway. After a thorough investigation First Precinct Officers located the defendant in his vehicle behind 684 Sunrise Highway a short time later. The defendant had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. The defendant was placed into Police custody without incident. The Nassau County Police Medic was transported to a local Hospital for treatment of a dislocated left ulna, fractured left hand and substantial pain to the neck and back area. The defendant was taken to a local hospital for an unrelated illness.
Joaquin Cabrera is charged with two counts of Driving While Intoxicated, Assault 3rd Degree, Reckless Endangerment 2nd Degree, Leaving the Scene of an Accident and Reckless Driving. He will be arraigned on Monday, December 14, 2020 in Mineola.
