Seventh Squad Detectives report the arrest of a Wyandanch male that occurred on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at 8:20 pm in Merrick.
According to Detectives, as part of Operation Natalie, Nassau County’s War Against Opioids, COPE officers while on patrol, observed a red Kia with an improperly displayed front license plate fail to signal while making a right turn out of the parking lot at 1780 Sunrise Highway. The officers activated their emergency lights and conducted a Vehicle and Traffic Law Stop in front of 1820 Sunrise Highway.
Officers detected a strong odor of marijuana and removed the defendant, Vernon Thornton, 32, of 56 Spruce Street from the vehicle. During the investigation, the officers recovered a loaded handgun and a high capacity magazine from the defendant’s vehicle. A substance believed to be marijuana and an additional controlled substance was also recovered.
A subsequent investigation revealed the loaded handgun had been reported stolen.
Defendant Thornton has been charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd Degree, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 4th Degree, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th Degree, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana 2nd Degree and multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.
He will be arraigned Wednesday, January 27, 2021, in Mineola.
