The Public Information office reports the arrest of a Syosset man for Driving While Intoxicated involving pedestrians that occurred in Syosset on Monday, May 31, 2021 at 4:36 pm.
According to police, defendant Datt Varum, 36 of 40 Ann Drive was driving a 2020 Hyundai south on Ann Drive in the vicinity of Betty street at which time his vehicle left the roadway on the wrong side striking a three-year-old female and a 33-year-old male on the sidewalk before hitting a 2019 Hyundai that was parked. The Three-year-old suffered abrasions to her face and legs. The male suffered facial fractures. Both victims were transported in a Nassau County Police Ambulance to nearby hospitals for treatment. Second Precinct Police observed the defendant Datt Varum having red glassy eyes, slurred speech and detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. A subsequent investigation determined the defendant was driving his vehicle while Intoxicated and placed him into police custody. The defendant suffered no injuries.
Defendant Datt Varnum is charged with Reckless Endangerment 2nd Degree, Reckless Driving, Assault 3rd Degree, and Driving While Intoxicated 1193. He will be arraigned on Tuesday, June 01, 2021 in Mineola.
