Fourth Squad detectives report the arrest of a Brooklyn man for an incident that occurred on Monday, July 19, 2021 at 2:05 pm in Island Park.
According to detectives, Steven Megel, 36, of 3066 Brighton 7th Street, became involved in a dispute with a male victim, 59, working at a car dealership located at 4062 Austin Boulevard. During the dispute, the victim began recording the altercation and Megel forcibly removed the cell phone from the victim’s hands. A struggle ensued, and the victim was able to recover his cell phone before Megel fled the scene in his vehicle, striking a 2018 Kia Soul parked in the lot of the car dealership. The male victim then proceeded to follow Megel, while he contacted police and notified officers of his location.
As Megel continued to leave the scene, he struck a 2020 Toyota Sienna, at Weidner Avenue and Lawson Boulevard where he exited his vehicle and fled on foot. As a result of the collision, the 60-year-old female operator of the Toyota, suffered injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Upon police arrival, officers conducted a canvass of the area, locating Megel and placing him into custody without further incident.
Defendant Megel is charged with Robbery 2nd Degree, Assault 2nd Degree and two (2) counts of Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree. He will be arraigned in First District Court, Hempstead on Tuesday, July, 20, 2021.
