The Marine Bureau reports the details of a Personal Water Craft (PWC) explosion that occurred on Sunday, August 15, 2021 at 5:10 p.m. in Oyster Bay.
According to Officers, Nassau County Marine 11 was on patrol in the water ways when the crew heard a possible explosion, then saw smoke confirming their suspicions. Marine 11 navigated toward the smoke and upon arrival, at Oyster Bay Marine Center-5 Bay avenue, they did discover a PWC, a jet ski, engulfed in flames and sinking. The driver was close to shore at the time of the incident and made it on land with only minor lacerations to his face. The driver of the PWC was taken by an Oyster Bay Fire Department Ambulance to a local hospital for his injuries. The PWC was recovered and removed from the water by the Town of Oyster Bay, Bay Constables. An investigation is currently ongoing, but there is no suspicious activity at this time.
The United States Coast Guard, USCG, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation were notified and the USCG responded to address any gasoline that may have leaked into the water.
