The Nassau County Police Department, along with the Hempstead Police Department, report the arrest of a Hempstead woman for Driving While Intoxicated/Leandra’s Law that occurred on Monday, September 20, 2021 at approximately 4:50 p.m. in Hempstead.
According to Police, Hempstead Police Officers arrived at South Franklin street and Grove street to perform a welfare check of a woman who was slumped over the steering wheel of a school bus. As the Officers attended to the female bus driver, now known to the them as Mercedes Parada, 29 of 75 Albemarle avenue, they did observe multiple clues indicating the presence of alcohol. Upon further investigation, it became clear that Mercedes Parada was intoxicated. At this time, the defendant was placed under arrest. All children were accounted for and safely released to their parents. The investigation is ongoing.
Mercedes Parada is charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated (Child Under 15) under the Leandra Law, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. She was arraigned on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at First District Court, Hempstead.
