The Third Squad reports the details of a shooting that occurred on Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 10:04 p.m. in New Cassel.
According to Detectives, Gavin Freeman, 20, of 273 Sohmer Place in Westbury, was inside the AAWA convenience store, located at 817 Prospect Avenue. He was approached by Christian Romulus, 19, of 47 Barrington Street in New Cassel and a fight ensued. Defendant Romulus was accompanied by four other subjects: Bryan Eric Toney, 19, of 195 E. Merrick Road in Freeport, and three others. Defendant Freeman was in possession of a handgun and began firing at all five subjects. Defendant Toney was also in possession of a firearm and began firing at defendant Freeman. During the altercation, defendant Romulus grabbed a female store clerk and used her as a shield, then dropped the victim so he could escape into the store bathroom. The victim was not injured.
All subjects fled the scene except defendant Romulus who was arrested at scene and transported to a local area hospital for treatment after being shot in the leg and grazed in the chest. He was released and taken into Police custody. He is charged with Kidnapping 2nd Degree, and Attempted Murder 2nd Degree. He will be arraigned on Sunday, July 23, 2023 at First District Court, 99 Main Street in Hempstead.
Defendant Toney was shot in the leg and in his thumb. He was arrested at a local hospital and placed into Police custody. He is charged with Attempted Murder 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree, and Criminal Use of a Firearm 1st Degree. He will be arraigned on Monday, July 24, 2023 at First District Court, 99 Main Street in Hempstead.
Defendant Freeman was shot in his leg. He was arrested at a local hospital after being admitted. He is charged with Attempted Murder 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree, and Criminal Use of a Firearm 1st Degree. He will be arraigned when medically practical.
