The Homicide Squad reports the details of a Serious Vehicular Accident involving a pedestrian that occurred on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at 1:50 PM in Freeport.
According to detectives, a 76-year-old male was crossing North Grove Street at the intersection of Brooklyn Avenue when he was struck by a light-colored sedan being operated by an unknown person. The vehicle then fled from the scene southbound. The pedestrian was transported to an area hospital by a Northwell Health ambulance where he is currently listed in critical condition.
The investigation is ongoing.

The above listed victim has succumbed to his injuries and pronounced deceased. The victim has been identified as Octavio Dejesus Espinal Sime, 76, of West Babylon.

Heidy Zelaya Almendarez, 24, of Wyandanch was arrested for the above incident. Zelaya Almendarez is charged with Leaving the Scene of an Incident without Reporting with a Fatality and Tampering with Physical Evidence. She was arraigned on Monday, December 29, 2025 at First District Court, Hempstead.
