The Public Information Office reports the arrest of a New Hyde Park woman for an incident that occurred on Thursday, July 16, 2026 at 1:15 p.m. in New Hyde Park. 

According to Police, Officers responded to a Covert Avenue residence for a report of children being left unattended in a driveway. After an investigation, it was determined that Defendant Claudia Garcia Zelaya, 51, of New Hyde Park, left her two-year-old male and five-yearold male grandchildren home alone with a 13-year-old female relative. Further investigation revealed that the 13-year-old left home and the children were left unsupervised for an unknown amount of time. The defendant, Claudia Garcia Zelaya was placed under arrest without incident. The victims, a two-year-old male and five-year-old male were unharmed and released to a family member. 

Defendant Claudia Garcia Zelaya is charged with two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child. She was arraigned on Friday, July 17, 2026 at First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead.
