Arson Bomb Squad Detectives report the arrest of a Baldwin man for Arson that occurred on Sunday, May 10, 2026 at 1:30 am in Freeport.

According to detectives, officers responded to a call for multiple vehicles on fire at Municipal Parking Field 1, located in the vicinity of 32 Smith Street. Upon arrival, officers found several vehicles engulfed in flames. The investigation by detectives determined that Defendant Elder Lopez Avalos, 27, of 2069 Ambrose Place, was responsible for starting the fire and was observed by officers a short distance away from the scene. He was placed into custody without further incident.

Further investigation by detectives also determined that the defendant was also responsible for setting previous vehicle fires on May 2, 2026, June 18, 2025 and June 29, 2025, in Freeport.

Defendant Elder Lopez Avalos is charged with six (6) counts of Arson 3rd Degree and Arson 4th Degree. He will be arraigned on May 11, 2026 at First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead.
