The Homicide Squad reports the arrest of a Queens man for a Vehicular Accident involving a Pedestrian that occurred on Thursday, February 26, 2026 at 8:03 a.m. in Merrick.
According to detectives, a Nassau County Police crossing guard was working on Sunrise Highway in the vicinity of Merrick Avenue when he was struck by a white 2020 Toyota Tacoma being operated by a 30-year-old male. The driver remained on scene and the male victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he is in critical condition. After an investigation, the driver of the vehicle defendant Joshua M. Alvarado of 137-14 Caney Lane, Rosedale was arrested without incident.
Defendant Alvarado is being charged with Vehicular Assault, Assault 2nd and 2 counts of Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. He is being arraigned Friday, February 27, 2026 at First District Court, 99 Main Street, Hempstead.

The above listed victim has succumbed to his injuries and has been pronounced deceased by a hospital physician. The victim has been identified as John Miro,70, of Massapequa.
